Alberto Santamaría: "Lo sublime en grado inferior. Arte y paisaje en Estados Unidos en el siglo

RESUMEN. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la recepción del concepto de lo sublime en Estados Unidos durante el siglo XIX. Para ello, en primer lugar, estudiaremos la obra de Thomas Jefferson quien, probablemente, fue el primero en introducir las ideas de la estética europea sobre el paisaje en Estados Unidos. En segundo lugar, estudiamos el modo en el que lo sublime es tomado en Estados Unidos, y, finalmente, nos centramos en la obra e ideas del pintor Thomas Cole.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this article is to analyze the reception of the concept of the sublime in the United States during the nineteenth century. Firstly, we will study Thomas Jefferson´s works who probably was the first in to introduce the ideas of European aesthetics in the United States. Secondly, we will study the way in which the sublime is taken to the United States, and finally, we will focus on the work and ideas of the painter Thomas Cole.
